On Saturday August 27th, 25 sailors representing Gannon University, Penn State Behrend, Mercyhurst University and the University of Pittsburgh completed nine races on the western end of Presque Isle Bay at the Erie Yacht Club Foundation’s Rickloff Community Boathouse.

The event was a Fall Warmup Regatta preparing student/sailors for the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s Fall Season. MASIA includes colleges across Pennsylvania and New York State, including Hobart, Cornell and Syracuse and including such schools as the US Naval Academy, Old Dominion and Hampton on Chesapeake Bay.

The students competed using the EYC Reyburn Sailing School’s fleet of equally matched 420s, 14 foot fiberglass sloops. Winds were generally light and from the southeast in the morning moving to the northeast and building to 8-10 knots in the afternoon.

Scoring was informal but Pitt skipper Geoff Wells of Erie, Michal Szelwach from Gannon and Caroline Mashyna from Behrend had consistently superior performances. Pitt was the low point team for the first rotation followed by Gannon and Behrend separated by only two points. Pitt was also low point in the second rotation followed by only one point by Behrend with Gannon in third.

AJ Miceli, Adviser/Coach of GUST (Gannon University Sailing Team) said, “This event was a great warmup for our trip to Hampton University over Labor Day weekend for the Edward Teach Memorial Regatta. More importantly, we were able to give all of our sailors, even those just brand new to the sport, a chance to gain some competition experience.”

Bill Lasher, Advisor of the Behrend sailing club, noted that he was impressed with how the less experienced sailors improved as the day went on, closing the gap between them and the leaders.
